AI and Emerging Technologies
Prof. Dr. David Asirvatham
Prof. Asirvatham has been deeply involved in advancing artificial intelligence and related emerging technologies through research, development, and professional leadership. He has supervised numerous postgraduate research projects in AI, machine learning, and smart systems. For example, he supervised work on an AI-based facial expression recognition model, an automatic speech recognition system for the Tamil language, IoT-driven smart mobility modeling, and machine-learning techniques for intrusion detection in edge computing environments. These projects reflect his commitment to applying AI and data analytics in areas such as computer vision, natural language processing, smart cities, and cybersecurity.
In addition to supervision, he has an extensive publication record in AI and data science. He has co-authored papers on deep learning and machine learning applications – for instance, developing a visual lie-detection dashboard using machine learning and neural networks, and using machine learning techniques to detect suicide ideation from social media data. His research also extends to IoT and edge computing; notably, he co-authored a blockchain-driven federated learning framework for secure IoT data protection. Through these publications and conference presentations, Prof. Asirvatham has contributed to knowledge in federated learning, predictive analytics, social media data mining, and other cutting-edge topics in the AI domain.
Furthermore, he has led the development of intelligent platforms and systems. A hallmark achievement is his invention of the Multimedia Learning System (MMLS), an early smart e-learning platform adopted in multiple countries. MMLS integrated multimedia and interactive learning content, earning international accolades and exemplifying the fusion of technology and education. He has also been involved in implementing smart infrastructure solutions (such as campus-wide smart card systems and digital learning content platforms) during his tenure at various institutions. These projects demonstrate his ability to apply emerging technologies to real-world educational and administrative challenges.
In professional communities, Prof. Asirvatham has taken on leadership roles in AI and data science organizations. Notably, he was the Secretary of the Artificial Intelligence Society of Malaysia in the mid-1990s, indicating his early involvement in the AI research community. Currently, he serves as the President of the Data Science Society Malaysia (since 2018), where he champions the development of data science and AI talent and initiatives nationally. Through these roles, he has been instrumental in shaping the discourse and collaboration in AI and data science within the region, staying at the forefront of emerging technology trends and their integration into academia and industry.
